Western Canaries is an exclusive repertoire of traditional Canarian music. Without great figurations with the timple as a solo instrument. Thirteen pieces from: La Palma, El Hierro, La Gomera and Tenerife.

It is a trip that begins with a jota , coming from a large part of the geography of Spain, such as: Aragón, Valencia, La Rioja or Navarra among other cities, and that on the islands, it is very peculiar to find the isa, derived of this dance and song spread in the Iberian Peninsula.

Then we find a pasacatre , which arrived in the Canary Islands in the 19th century from a neighboring country: France.

We are going to the 'pretty island', La Palma, with a very popular romance, the dance of wheat :

"Cho Juan Pereñal has a sandy area

a grain of wheat wants to sow

he sows it on the top he takes it in the sea. "

El Hierro is our next destination with the saint's dance , affected by the underwater volcanic eruption south of La Restinga, the island revives, when its inhabitants hear the voice of Valentina herself "la de Sabinosa".

In fifth place appear the airs of lime . Although they stand out in the municipalities of Gran Canaria, we have fallen in love with those of La Palma. Formerly, the lyrics were improvised and the picaresque stubbornness among peasants stood out:

"You don't mess with me
that I am also capable
to tell you four things
that you won't sing anymore. "

And not everything is about dancing and dancing. There are stories for not sleeping. As for example in La Gomera, where the Legend tells that Gara and Jonay, two young aborigines, in love, end up committing suicide together in Alto del Garajonay.

But love in the western Canaries goes on, with a ballad by Braulio, touring villages, it says like this:

"Tenerife, Tenerife,

from Teno to Taganana
from Abona to Garachico.
I was born in the distance

wrapped in nostalgia,

the song that I dedicate to you today. "

Few events are as entertaining and friendly as those held every five years on La Palma, corresponding to the Bajada de La Virgen de Las Nieves. To the sound of the polka: Dance of the dwarfs .

From the European courts, we added an instrumental saloon , as was done in the string dances of yesteryear on the island of Tenerife.

We do not forget the carnival. And although there are them in all parts of the world, not in all places we find the mascarita. Or what is the same, the Gomera mazurka .

The live dance ? I do not know how to dance, that if I knew, I would already be. Top up flower of flowers, that I am dying for your loves. Your lizard, I perennial. If you are fat, I am too.

From the jump to the dance it gives us an air. Thus we come to the laments with some malagueñas , which although they are traditional in Andalusia, come from the old fandangos of the deepest styles of flamenco.

And how not to end with one of the most spectacular dances of the Islands, and that are invited in the pilgrimages of the Canary Islands as the most anticipated by their assistants and pilgrims. With unique characteristics, from the dancers' clothing to the music, based on a ternary rhythm that welcomes a variable melody, depending on the touch, performed by the «pito» (flute) and counterpoint by the great drums and «chácaras» (castanets) of the dancers. We are talking about: the dance of the Virgin of the island of El Hierro.
